Every year millions of people are drawn to Zion National Park for its infinite beauty and incredible hiking. Moreover, what many people may not realize is that it’s also the perfect destination for a solo adventure. Traveling alone can be challenging, especially when embarking on an outdoorsy trip. Luckily, Zion is the ideal place to make even first time solo travelers feel comfortable on their own.
Ready to take a solo trip? Here are the best things to do in Zion National Park.
Hike The Watchman Trail
The Watchman Trail is a moderate three mile round trip route that offers hikers nice views of the Springdale area. It’s often overlooked by visitors, who tend to favor the more popular Angel’s Landing or Narrows hikes, but the Watchman is considered a hidden gem by many. Few crowds, easy access to the trailhead, and a relatively undemanding climb are just a few reasons to consider trying this hike on your solo trip to Zion.
Drive The Zion-Mount Carmel Scenic Highway
Connecting the park’s south and east entrances, the Zion-Mount Carmel Scenic Drive is a ten mile drive showcasing breathtaking views and some of Zion’s most amazing features. Drivers will have to navigate several switchbacks, as well as the Zion-Mount Carmel Tunnel, but it’s a fairly straightforward drive otherwise. There are several great hikes in this area of the park, including one of my favorites, the Zion Canyon Overlook Trail.
Traverse The Canyon Overlook Trail
The Zion Canyon Overlook Trail is a short but impressive trail that ends with panoramic views of the main canyon. Located just past the Zion-Mount Carmel Tunnel, the trail’s parking lot is very small, so I’d recommend hiking this route early in the morning. When I visited Zion, I arrived about an hour before sunrise and was able to snag a spot easily. Although I hiked the first bit of the trail in the dark, the timing worked out perfectly and I reached the overlook shortly before sunrise.
Stop At Deep Creek Coffee Company
For many people, including myself, one of the more difficult aspects of traveling solo is dining alone. When I’m by myself, I usually find it more enjoyable to try casual places, such as cafes and coffee shops, rather than restaurants.
In Springdale, Deep Creek Coffee Company is an great choice located just outside the park entrance. It has a laid back atmosphere, and both the coffee and food are delicious. After your morning hike, stop by for lunch and try the Honey Mustard Chicken Sandwich and a coffee. I promise you won’t regret it!
Stroll The Riverside Walk To The Narrows
The Riverside Walk, also known as the Gateway to the Narrows, is a nicely paved one mile path that leads you directly to the start of the famous Narrows hike. The trail is located along the edge of the Virgin River, allowing visitors to experience the canyon walls up close without having to wade into the water. Simply take the Zion shuttle to the last stop at the Temple of Sinawava and you’ll find access to the trailhead just past the shuttle stop.
Relax By The Pool With A View
What better way to spend an afternoon after a long day of hiking than by going for a relaxing swim in the pool or dip in the hot tub? If you’re not staying in the park itself, I’d recommend booking a room at the Hampton Inn & Suites in Springdale. It has a nice outdoor pool area, featuring gorgeous views of the surrounding canyons.
