Here’s everything you need to know about how to make the most of a day trip from Paris to the Palace of Versailles!
How To Get To Versailles From Paris
Getting to Versailles By Car
So, you’ve got a rental car and you’re feeling like a true road warrior? While driving to Versailles is certainly an option, I’m going to let you in on a little secret: taking the train is the way to go. Trust me, it’ll save you from the headache of navigating unfamiliar roads and Parisian traffic. However, if you’re feeling adventurous and want to tackle the 20 km journey from Paris to Versailles in your rental car, be prepared for a drive that could take anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour.
Parking is available on-site, but get ready to pay a pretty penny for the privilege. The cost varies, but expect to pay around €30 for a full day. Alternatively, you can try your luck with street parking nearby, but be warned – spots are few and far between, and you may end up circling the block like a confused tourist.
Getting to Versailles By Train
Getting from Paris to the Palace of Versailles by train is a breeze. In my opinion, it’s the easiest and most convenient choice. Hop on the RER C train at any of the central Paris stations on the line, and in no time, you’ll find yourself at the palace gates. Depending on which station is your starting point, the journey takes about 30 minutes to an hour. The train runs on a regular schedule throughout the day, so you can easily plan your trip according to your agenda. Just make sure you get off at the right stop – Versailles Château Rive Gauche. Then, follow the signs to the palace entrance, walk about ten minutes, and voilà – you’ve arrived!
Tip: Save yourself time and hassle on your return trip by purchasing round-trip tickets at the start of your journey.
Taking A Tour Of Versailles
If you’re not keen on driving or taking the train, a tour of Versailles from Paris is a great alternative. You can join a group tour, hire a private guide, or even hop on a bike and pedal through the gardens with the wind in your hair. Personally, I had my eye on the Versailles Bike Tour offered by Blue Fox Travel – I mean, what could be more fun than zipping around the palace gardens on a bicycle? Unfortunately, I didn’t have the chance to experience it myself this time around, but it’s on my list for my next visit.
Buying Tickets For The Palace of Versailles
When planning your day at the Palace of Versailles, you might wonder which ticket option makes the most sense for your visit. If you’re like me and want to see it all, I highly recommend the Passport Ticket. You’ll get access to the entire estate, including the palace, gardens, and my absolute favorite, the estate of Trianon, for one price! This ticket includes timed entry and currently costs 28.50 euros.
On the other hand, if you’re short on time, the Palace Ticket might be a better choice. It costs 19.50 euros and grants entry to the palace’s main attractions but doesn’t include admission to the gardens or Trianon estate.
Keep in mind that if you’re hoping to see the musical fountain shows (day or night), you’ll have to purchase those tickets separately. But, no matter how you choose to explore, remember to buy your ticket online in advance. The royal grounds can get pretty busy, especially during peak season!
Things To Do And See At Versailles
Get ready for a jam-packed day because there’s so much to see and do at Versailles. While you might not be able to squeeze in every single activity I’ve recommended below, here are some top picks to help make the most of your day trip.
Discover The History Of The Palace
Unleash your inner history buff and dive into the enchanting tales of Versailles. From secret affairs to scandalous feuds and grand royal ceremonies, there’s no shortage of fascinating stories waiting to be revealed. Stroll through the luxurious rooms and corridors, and learn about everything from the extravagance of Louis XIV to the ill-fated queen Marie Antoinette and her lavish lifestyle.
Marvel at the Hall of Mirrors
Step into the Hall of Mirrors and prepare to be dazzled! With 357 mirrors reflecting the beautiful views of the gardens and the ornate ceiling painted with stunning frescoes, it’s no wonder this room is one of the most popular attractions on a day trip from Paris to Versailles. As you walk the length of the hall, notice all the intricate details of the space. Take a few minutes to snap some photos because you’ll definitely want to remember this moment.
See the Queen’s Apartments
Prepare to feel like royalty as you enter the Queen’s Apartments. From the plush velvet furniture to the ornate chandeliers, it’s like stepping into a fairytale. You can almost picture Marie Antoinette getting her hair done and gossiping with her ladies-in-waiting. While you’re there, don’t forget to check out the bedchamber – it’s fit for a queen…literally.
Admire the Sculptures
Move aside Michelangelo, the sculptors at the Palace of Versailles are giving you a run for your money. With grandiose outdoor pieces towering over the gardens and delicate indoor works adorning the rooms, there’s something fascinating to behold at every turn. Keep your eyes peeled for hidden treasures and secret symbols – you never know what you might uncover.
Explore the Royal Stables
Don’t miss out on one of the best-kept secrets at Versailles – the Royal Stables. Tucked away from the main palace, this historic site consists of two buildings: the Great Stables and the Small Stables. Once home to the majestic royal horses and carriages, the Royal Stables are now open to the public for exploration. Here you can explore the Gallery of Coaches, tour the stables, and even attend an equestrian show.
Just bear in mind that if you want to catch one of the shows, you’ll need to snag a separate ticket. Unfortunately, the Passport and Palace tickets won’t get you in the door. Also, remember that these performances usually take place on weekends, so plan accordingly if you want to see the horses in action.
Wander through the Gardens
Oh, the gardens of Versailles! They’re like a dreamy maze of greenery that will make you forget all your worries. Stroll through the fragrant citrus gardens, admire the beauty of an English-style garden, and stop and smell the roses in the breathtaking rose gardens. And if you’re feeling adventurous, don’t miss the chance to explore the sprawling maze garden, where you can put your navigation skills to the test!
Rent a Bike
Hop on a bike and pedal your way through history in Versailles. Zoom past fountains, glide through the forest, and coast down the tree-lined paths of the Grand Canal. With so much to see on a day trip, renting a bike is the perfect way to cover more ground and get some exercise in the process.
Simply go to the hire point at Little Venice, conveniently located on the banks of the Grand Canal. You can hire bikes for as little as 30 minutes, and payment is easy with either cash or card. Just remember to bring a valid ID for the deposit per bike. Also, keep in mind bike hire is only available from mid-February to mid-November, with different hours depending on the season.
Row A Boat
Of all the fun things you can do on a day trip from Paris to Versailles, boating on the Grand Canal is the crème de la crème! To start your adventure, head over to the hire point at Little Venice on the banks of the Grand Canal. For just 19 euros per hour, you can experience the magic of Versailles from a whole new perspective.
Don’t forget to bring a valid ID for the boat deposit, which you can pay with either card or cash. Opening hours change with the seasons, so be sure to check ahead and know that rowboat rentals are closed from mid-November to the end of February.
After securing your rental, it’s time to climb aboard. As you glide along the water, imagine yourself as royalty, waving to your subjects from your majestic vessel. Just be careful not to capsize, unless you want to join the ducks for a swim!
Picnic on the Grand Canal
What’s better than a picnic in the park? A picnic on the Grand Canal, of course. Grab your baguette and brie, spread out a blanket, and soak up the sun while watching the swans float by.
Indulge in Macarons
The only thing that could make a picnic on the Grand Canal even better is a box of mouthwatering macarons. Macarons at Versailles are like a match made in dessert heaven – they’re fancy, colorful, and oh-so-tasty! Satisfy your sweet tooth with the delicious Ladurée macarons and experience a taste of Parisian perfection amidst the splendor of French royalty.
Go Horseback Riding
Grab your riding boots and get ready to experience the stunning grounds of Versailles in a unique way by going horseback riding with Horse in the City. This company has received rave reviews for its guided tours, which take you through the picturesque gardens and forests surrounding the palace. The ride is a bit pricey, but when else can you say you’ve cantered your way through the Sun King’s palace? Plus, there’s nothing quite like seeing the grandeur of Versailles from the back of a horse.
Visit the Estate of Trianon
Visiting the Estate of Trianon is like taking a walk in Marie Antoinette’s shoes. This hidden gem is a must-see for anyone looking to escape the hustle and bustle of the Palace of Versailles and step into a more serene and whimsical world.
The estate consists of two smaller palaces, the Grand Trianon and the Petit Trianon, both of which were used as retreats by French royalty in the 18th century. The real star of the show, however, is the Queen’s Hamlet, a picturesque village complete with a mill, a dairy, and even a working farm. This charming little oasis is my personal favorite, and it’s easy to see why Marie Antoinette loved spending her time here.
The Estate of Trianon is open daily except on Mondays, so plan your visit accordingly. Trust me, a trip to this magical corner of Versailles is worth the extra effort.
Witness the Musical Fountain Shows
Looking for a mesmerizing experience on your day trip to Versailles? Look no further than a fountain show. Whether you catch the daytime show with its bursts of water choreographed to music or the enchanting nighttime display illuminated by the flickering of candlelight, you’re in for a treat.
Explore The Local Markets
Versailles isn’t just about fancy palaces and gardens – the local markets are a must for anyone looking to get a taste of the vibrant local culture and delicious cuisine. From fresh produce and artisanal cheeses to aromatic spices and homemade pastries, the markets are a sensory feast for visitors. Amble through the colorful stalls, interact with friendly vendors and sample some of the best flavors of France.
If you’re planning a picnic in Versailles, be sure to stop by the markets and pick up some tasty treats beforehand. Shopping at the markets is also a fantastic way to support small businesses and the local community.
Where To Eat At The Palace of Versailles
If you’re not in the mood to venture to the local market, fear not! The Palace of Versailles has got you covered with various dining choices. Treat yourself to an elaborate meal fit for royalty at Ore, the palace’s first full-service restaurant, or opt for a more casual bite at La Flottille, a charming café located on the edge of the Grand Canal. Looking for something sweet? Head to Angelina and spoil yourself with their famous hot chocolate and delectable pastries. Whatever your tastes may be, there’s no shortage of delicious options to fuel your adventures at Versailles.
